$1,319 Capital One Venture X, best for travel
in year one, then $569 a year after
We ranked the 5 travel cards we’ve confirmed and left out American Express Gold and Chase Sapphire Preferred until we can pin each to one number.
Capital One Venture X leads year one on its $750 welcome bonus against the Citi Strata Premier’s $600; from year two the Citi Strata Premier pays more.
Ranked by the math
Ranked for a family that spends $800 a month on groceries, $200 on dining, $250 on gas, $500 on travel and $600 on everything else.
Left out until we can pin one number: the American Express Gold, because its welcome offer varies by applicant and the Chase Sapphire Preferred, because it carries a gas rate we have seen but not confirmed.

Capital One Venture stays behind Capital One Venture X at every spend on travel from $0 to $5,000 a month, with the rest unchanged; here the gap is $100 in year one.
Every card on the travel door runs through the same math: its published rate on each line of that spending, for twelve months, with any cap applied in dollars. Points are counted at the issuer’s travel rate, never at a transfer partner’s best case.
A welcome bonus counts only when this spending reaches its minimum inside the offer window, and then all of it, because that is how the issuer pays it. Credits count at what a normal person actually uses, which can be the full amount. The annual fee comes off.
That gives each card a year-one figure and an every-year figure. The list is ordered by year one; where two tie, the lower fee goes first. Capital One Venture X comes out at $1,319 in year one, and its receipt above shows every line of it.
